Workshop Instructor:
The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature a workshop with award winning local watercolor artist Stacy Lund Levy.

Stacy Lund Levy AWS, BWS, PWS, PWCS, AWA
WORKSHOP SUBJECT:
Painting an urban landscape can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. This two day watercolor workshop will focus on simplifying complicated structures into basic shapes. Working with a photo reference we will concentrate on which elements to add or remove to strengthen composition and where added detail will be most impactful. We will experiment with a range of value and color to create atmospheric perspective. Basic perspective will be introduced and photo references will be provided.

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE:
All levels (basic knowledge & some previous experiences strongly recommended to benefit from this workshop)
All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium.

SUPPLY LIST:
Paints
I prefer Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton artist grade paints. The colors that I have listed below always live on my palette and are standard for most of my paintings. I will not be using them all. I put a star next to the ones that I will be using the most for this workshop. You do not have to buy every color on this list! Feel free to use your own palette.
*Alizarin Crimson permanent
Pyrol Scarlet
Vermillion
*Quinacridone gold
Aureolin
Hookers Green
Antwerp Blue
*Ultramarine Blue
*Peacock Blue
*Indigo
Winsor Blue green shade
*Mineral Violet
*Indanthrone Blue
*Burnt Sienna
*Burnt Umber
*Cerulean Blue
*Cobalt Blue
*Yellow ochre
Opera Pink
Quinacridone Coral
Brushes
Various sizes (again, whatever you are comfortable with).
I will be using
- a mop OR 1” flat for backgrounds, you do not need both.
- combination of #6, 8, 10, 12, 14 rounds. I prefer Escoda Perla and KINGART Original Gold 9020 ( they are a replacement for Loew Cornell Ultra Round brushes that are no longer made).
- Rigger or fine pointed brush for details as needed.
- Hake brush 2" or larger

Paper
Feel free to use whatever brand of good quality paper that you are comfortable on which to transfer your reference drawings. Also bring several sheets of scrap paper to practice the various exercises. I recommend either Arches, Fabriano, or Saunders Waterford. I use Arches 300 lb.
I recommend painting on a half sheet (22” x 15”), however, size doesn’t matter. Details are easier with a larger piece of paper.
Additional Supplies
Bring the standard watercolor supplies:
water containers
paper towels or small towel
block or board to attach watercolor paper
Pencils
Masking fluid, Pebeo is the brand I use. Make sure it is still fluid, like the consistency of water.
Rubber cement pick up
Art tape (the white one) OR masking tape
Brush for masking fluid
Small container of dish soap (1 Tablespoon is plenty)
12 inch ruler
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:
About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from Stacy that she will use for the class. An image of Stacy's line drawing will also be provided to those registered so you may trace the painting we will be working on.
Once you have the images be sure to draw or trace the line drawing on your own paper. Stacy will be working with 1/2 sheet size paper and it is recommended you do the same because painting details is harder on smaller paper.
BIOGRAPHY:

Artist and Baltimore native, Stacy Lund Levy has been creating art in many forms since kindergarten. She earned an BA from Hood College in Biochemistry as well as a MA from The Johns Hopkins Art as Applied to Medicine program. Combining her artistic talents with her intellectual interest in anatomy and science, she initially worked as a medical illustrator. Stacy then opted to establish Lund Art Studios, a career move that enabled her to take on a variety of clients locally and nationally, and to jury shows, teach classes and workshops, give demonstrations, and exhibit her artwork.
Stacy works primarily in watercolor and collage. She is a signature member of the American, Baltimore, National, Pennsylvania and Transparent Watercolor Societies, as well the AWA, American Women Artists.
Artist Statement:
I love drawing and painting. Once I choose my subject, the creative process is almost scientific. It is very satisfying to me to attempt to transform a 3-D moment in time into a 2-D piece of art.
To me, creating any art is a continuous series of mini puzzles that need solutions. As I am working, I am asking myself a series of questions. What supports the object or being? The weight is centered where? How is it connected? What colors should I use to achieve the feeling that I want to convey? I continually look for “clues” in my subject and work until I am satisfied. If I have answered all the questions and solved all the puzzles, the result is tremendously satisfying for me and hopefully the viewer.
