President’s Palette
Jennifer Kohn Murtha President, Baltimore Watercolor Society I love art shows! I love going to them, I love reading about them, but most of all, I love doing art shows. The chance to share your best work, the opportunity to see other artist’s work and to ooh and aah over each other’s paintings or even, perchance, to sell one…nothing is more fun than an art show! So, when our excellent exhibit chairperson, David Drown, hooked Baltimore Watercolor Society up with Manor Mill, I was so excited! Yay! The opening reception was March 14, 2026, and what a great reception it was! Lots of people, lots of food, lots of beautiful work to see. What gallery is more beautiful than Manor Mill? A three-hundred-year-old grist mill (I had to look that up: it’s a place where grain is ground into flour) which has stood the test of time with some loving restoration and imaginative marketing. Apparently it was a winery before it became a gallery. The things one learns in hidden Baltimore! Another thing I like about doing art shows is the chance to measure myself against other artists. I tell my students, and I believe myself, that it does no one any good to compare one’s self to anyone else, BUT is it good to learn from another person who’s expert in an area that you’re not? Yes! This is a golden opportunity to study the work of all levels of skilled artists who know something that you don’t know. What can you learn from others? What makes some paintings award-winning and some not? An art show is the perfect place to educate yourself in so many ways. So, mosey on up or down to Manor Mill, enjoy the beautiful show, open Wednesday through Sunday from 12–6 pm, until May 9th, and see what you can learn. And, heck, add to your art collection! While I’m on the topic of learning, look at the art for composition, values, drawing, and amount of water used, and see how you can further master your craft. If you’re not already a Signature Artist, analyze the ways in which you could become one. If you don’t think that you’re ready, no worries. You’ll be ready one of these years. Don’t forget that Baltimore Watercolor Society juries for Signature Artists twice a year—maybe this is your year to be juried in and to be able to sign your paintings so and so with BWS underneath your signature. So cool! Speaking of cool, Janet Freeman (awards chair) and I started the Schmoozer’s Society on the First Wednesday in March at Shannon’s Saloon in Ellicott City. We’ve chosen that as our day to meet monthly. So, on April the first (and no, we’re cool, not fools), we’ll meet again at noon at Shannon’s Saloon. We can plot on how to get you signature status. Grin. Seriously. Please let me know if you are coming. And let’s be cool fools together! jkmportraits@gmail.com 2026 Member Exhibits: Watch for Dates and Details Our next all-Member exhibit will be at the Meeting House Gallery in Columbia, MD, and will run May 16–July 25. The call for artists for this exhibit went out on February 1, and registration is open through April 1, 2026. More information is available here. Two Signature Member exhibits are planned for the remainder of the year: a summer exhibit at The Creative Alliance Gallery in Baltimore and a winter exhibit at the Delaplaine Gallery in Frederick, MD. The calls for artists for these two events will be announced in the spring. Stay tuned for details! |
From the Archives: Notes from the 1952 Exhibition
by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair

In February we discussed William G. Evans, the Baltimore Water Color Club’s (BWCC, the predecessor to the Baltimore Water Color Society) President from 1951 to 1955. This month we look at the BWCC’s 47th Annual Exhibition, which took place February 5–26, 1952, at the Baltimore Museum of Art, during Evans’ Presidency. A review of the exhibition published in the Sun on February 17 provides interesting insights on the club during this time period. This was four years after the Club’s rebirth after the Second World War. The show had two jurors, an interesting pairing of well-known artist Harry Leith-Ross and local commercial artist George C. Adams. The passage describing the efforts needed to squeeze the show into the BMA’s ground floor gallery is a testament to the successful postwar growth of the club. It is also a reminder of the jurying practices which would later strain the relationship between the BWCC and the BMA, as we’ve discussed in earlier articles. Club members were guaranteed that at least one of their two submissions would be included in the exhibition. BMA space limitations limited the number of members having two paintings in the exhibition to 10. I can hear the collective sigh of sympathy from current day Mid-Atlantic Exhibition applicants, who have no guarantee of acceptance of one, let alone two, entries. Also evident are familiar synergies and tensions between famous out-of-town artists and the local membership (perhaps the selection of the two jurors, a well-known artist and a local, was intended to mirror this). In 1952 most of the awards went to the former. Congratulations to BWCC President Evans, who won the prize for Best Water Color by a Maryland Artist. Former BWCC President R. McGill Mackall also had a painting in the exhibition. We also have notes from the BMA archives which list the full set of paintings in the exhibition, along with a variety of interesting notes. I get tired just thinking of the effort to create something like this on a typewriter. Only one painting is marked as sold, but there might have been other places where sales were recorded.

Note: The above Upcoming Events summary only displays the start date for each event. For full details please click on the event, or visit the Events page. Teach? Update Us Please Whether you’re teaching at a university or providing one-to-one tutorials, if BWS members can sign up to learn from you, we want to know what you’re doing. The Baltimore Watercolor Society has a list of members who teach on its website -- that’s a great resource. However, after introducing a “Teacher Tuesday” feature to BWS Facebook and Instagram, Social Media/Publicity Chair Lia Nigro discovered it’s not always easy to define what’s going on at the moment. “I’ve run through the list and profiled everyone where I could immediately find information on current classes. But I know there are more teachers out there!” BWS social media is a great way to get free publicity and reach new potential students, especially if your watercolor instruction goes beyond beginning levels. Want in? Just send a note to publicity@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Already profiled in a “Teacher Tuesday”? Don’t be shy about providing updates. We look forward to hearing from you. Member NewsBWS members may submit a 60-word announcement gratis to be listed under the heading “Member News,” along with one image related to the announcement. Submissions are due by the 15th of the month preceding publication date, and may be edited for length or clarity. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Be sure to include your phone number in case there are any questions about your announcement. Boxed-off featured ads are available for $25 and may include up to 100 words and one image. Contact the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org for details. Two paintings by Anni Matsick, “Waves” and “We are the Honey Bees” (shown), have been accepted in the 2026 Watercolor USA exhibit on display May 30–July 25, 2026 at Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, MO.
