President’s Palette
Jennifer Kohn Murtha President, Baltimore Watercolor Society I’m a portrait artist. That’s what I always wanted to be; that’s who I am. Sometimes, however—sshhh, don’t tell anyone—I get a little bored with painting portraits. That’s when plein air landscape calls my name, loudly and clearly. Soooo, when I heard that our excellent workshop chair Yogini Dahiwadkar had booked my friend and outstanding artist Barb Kiwak for a three day plein aire workshop, my joy knew no bounds. Or, in plain English, hot diggety dog! Up bright and early on a beautiful, sunny Monday. And armed with hats, water, paper, pencils, etc, all those things that one needs for painting outside. A fine day at exquisite Brighton Dam Azalea Gardens…big, fluffy clouds, blue sky, trees galore. One tiny problem reared its head…we froze our nether ends off: the sun said adios as the wind picked up and made a reasonable temperature of 57 feel like 37. Instead of a full day of working in nature, we weenies all went home at about 1:30. It’s impossible to paint when your hands are frozen stiff! That’s with gloves on. Anyway, as I told Yogini, next time we do this, although her list of supplies was perfect, let’s include some Jack Daniels. That way, we’d all warm up quickly! To be continued. Continued. Day two of the workshop was a HUGE improvement over the day before. Bright, sunny and almost no wind, and exquisite Jerusalem Mill surrounded us with both natural and earthly beauty, the latter some of those glorious 18th- and 19th-century buildings of which Maryland can be justly proud. Barb did another fabulous demo, we each found a spot to call our own, including my friend Sandy Hohne, who sat in the river to get the best view of the covered bridge. What we artists do for love! The end result was a lot of good paintings, a fun and relaxing day, and the desire to move into one of the houses at Jerusalem Mill. Pack the cats, I’m a-coming! I did hear a rumor that our former BWS president Sherry Morrell painted at the side of the road…with cars whizzing by…but oh my, you should have seen her drawing for her next painting. Be still my beating heart! Which leads us to Last call. Wednesday dawned cool, gray, and a bit wet but by around 11 a.m., things were clearing up, we had a great morning critique from which we all benefitted, and everyone got started on his or her projects. The venue was Ellicott City and what a day it was. First, the critique, then, we all found places that called to us and started drawing and painting. After a frigid Monday, we basked in the warm sunshine, listening to the brook and the birds sing and enjoying gentle breezes and shifting light. That’s one of the challenges of plein aire painting, finding a light pattern and sticking with it. Everyone did a great job, and tired but happy, we went home from this truly special and wonderful workshop. Missed it this year? Same time, next year! You’re wondering why I shared my workshop experience with you? Because, dear BWS members, we’re not only here for shows, fun though they are. We’re also an educational institution. Workshops are a wonderful way to challenge yourself, to meet new people, and to find out if this subject might be the one thing that you love painting most. So, come on down and let’s all learn together. Even if I got an evil sunburn (my fault!) this workshop was a total joy. Speaking of learning. The Schmoozer’s Society will be meeting on May 6 at 11:30 a.m., once again at Shannon’s Saloon on Route 40. Please let me know if you’re coming. Either email me at jkmportraits@gmail.com, text me (please tell me who you are) or call at 443-834-4160. We had a great time on April 1. Let’s do it again. 2026 Member Exhibits: Watch for Dates and Details Our next all-Member exhibit will be at the Meeting House Gallery in Columbia, MD, and will run May 16–July 25. The call for artists for this exhibit went out on February 1, and registration was open through April 1, 2026. More information is available here. Two Signature Member exhibits are planned for the remainder of the year: a summer exhibit at The Creative Alliance Gallery in Baltimore and a winter exhibit at the Delaplaine Gallery in Frederick, MD. The calls for artists for these two events will be announced in the spring. Stay tuned for details! |
From the Archives: The 1925 Exhibition—The Beginning of a 37-Year Collaboration with the BMA
by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair
The 29th Annual Exhibition of the Baltimore Water Color Club (BWCC, the predecessor to the Baltimore Water Color Society) was held March 11 - April 5, 1925 at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). It was the first collaboration between the BWCC and the BMA after a string of a dozen annual exhibitions at the Peabody Art Gallery. (The annual exhibitions began in 1892, but a few years were skipped for various reasons, including the 1904 Baltimore fire.)
The BMA was founded in 1914 as part of the city’s master plan for rebuilding after the 1904 fire, but it did not move into its current Wyman Park location until 1929. In 1925 the museum was at a temporary location in Mount Vernon at the former home of its prime benefactor Mary Elizabeth Garrett at 101 West Monument Street.
An article in the Sun on March 1925 introduced the jurors and explained the plans for the exhibition. The exhibition was held concurrently with an exhibition of oils and watercolors by the late Swedish artist Anders Zorn.

The exhibition catalog was a four-panel folding pamphlet, printed on both sides. It includes a listing of the addresses of all the exhibitors, which I find fascinating.

|
The two exhibitions were reviewed in the Sun on March 15, 1925. I think it’s fair to say that the BWCC’s show received a tepid response from the critic.
|
At the close of the exhibition the Sun published an announcement that BWCC President Lilian Giffen was the recipient of a $50 associate membership prize.
The BWCC’s annual exhibitions would continue to be held at the BMA through 1961. |

Upcoming Events
Note: The above Upcoming Events summary only displays the start date for each event. For full details please click on the event, or visit the Events page. Teach? Update Us Please Whether you’re teaching at a university or providing one-to-one tutorials, if BWS members can sign up to learn from you, we want to know what you’re doing. The Baltimore Watercolor Society has a list of members who teach on its website -- that’s a great resource. However, after introducing a “Teacher Tuesday” feature to BWS Facebook and Instagram, Social Media/Publicity Chair Lia Nigro discovered it’s not always easy to define what’s going on at the moment. “I’ve run through the list and profiled everyone where I could immediately find information on current classes. But I know there are more teachers out there!” BWS social media is a great way to get free publicity and reach new potential students, especially if your watercolor instruction goes beyond beginning levels. Want in? Just send a note to publicity@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Already profiled in a “Teacher Tuesday”? Don’t be shy about providing updates. We look forward to hearing from you. Member NewsBWS members may submit a 60-word announcement gratis to be listed under the heading “Member News,” along with one image related to the announcement. Submissions are due by the 15th of the month preceding publication date, and may be edited for length or clarity. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Be sure to include your phone number in case there are any questions about your announcement. Boxed-off featured ads are available for $25 and may include up to 100 words and one image. Contact the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org for details. J. M. Littleton's work is featured in the May 2026 issue of PleinAir magazine for winning the Animal & Birds Category in the December 2025 PleinAir Salon Art Competition. April Rimpo is thrilled to have her paintings included in nine exhibitions and that “Poetic Sensitivity” received an award in the 2026 17th Annual Signature American Watercolor Exhibition at Fallbrook Art Center in Fallbrook, CA.
Annie Strack had two paintings juried into the North Star Watercolor Society 2026 National Exhibition.
BWS Signature Member Theodora T. Tilton will offer a workshop that explores the natural world through painting en plein air in the Shenandoah Mountains, from June 5–7, 2026. Choosing oil or watercolor, students of all levels will paint en plein air, in the beautiful mountains surrounding historic Shrine Mont in Orkney Springs, Virginia.
