President’s Palette
Jennifer Kohn Murtha President, Baltimore Watercolor Society I’m a glutton for punishment, I really am. Not only am I president of about fifty million societies and clubs, I said that I’d do a PowerPoint program for Washington Water Color Association. What’s the big deal, you ask? Welp, got to talk about 250 Years of American Watercolor. That’s a lot of watercolor!! Then, being me, the glutton, etc., I had to do a little immediate research on Google. Okay, true confessions, I, the overwhelmed, stayed up until midnight taking notes and reading about this fascinating medium. ( Midnight is not that big of a deal unless you have to get up at 6.) And you know what? It’s important to document this journey through 250 years of American Watercolor. I really started looking at anonymous works-not all made by women, although most probably were- and was amazed at the differences between watercolor then and now. In the nineteenth century, most particularly, women of good family who were in search of a husband were taught to cook, sew, etc. and to watercolor. Spelt water color back then. The medium was sneered at by men, who termed it, disparagingly, a woman’s medium. However, we women had the last laugh. Two things happened: two great male artists in the 1800s, John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer, took up watercolor and brought it to the fore. Other nineteenth century men also promoted it, including the English painter Joseph William Mallord Turner and Thomas Moran. In 1885, eight women--eight great women including Swann Harvey Beacham, Christiania Bond, Gabrielle De Veau Clements, Lulu Neilson Ford, Dora Louise Murdoch, Louisa Stuart, B.E. Owens, and Elizabeth Smith, founded what’s now known as Baltimore Watercolor Society. Long May It Wave! Next year, I’ll be teaching a Lunch and Learn for CCBC, where I’m an instructor, on The Big Three: The Charcoal Club, Baltimore Watercolor Society, and Schuler School of Fine Arts. All three have had a profound influence on my life in many ways and on the lives of so many other artists, including many members of Baltimore Watercolor Society. Think about that, everybody. Charcoal Club, 1882, Baltimore Watercolor Society, 1885, Schuler School, 1906 and 1959. Three amazing art institutions, two still around, one gone but being resurrected. Aren’t we artists lucky to have such history to share and such a wealth of art education to share too? Yes, we are. And you know, you might want to join Washington Water Color Association…you just might. Results of Recent BWS Member Votes Thanks to all who voted in the two recent votes on matters important to ongoing BWS operations. Members were notified of the votes by email and the votes were conducted using the polling facility offered by our Wild Apricot administrative system (with tech-averse members having the option to register their votes manually). Following are the results. 2026 BWS Bylaws Amendments Two changes were proposed to the BWS Bylaws:
Results: The poll was open to BWS members May 25-31, 2026. Of 133 members who voted. 127 approved both changes and 6 disapproved both changes. The Bylaws changes are approved. Members may view the current BWS Bylaws at any time via the Bylaws/Documents option under the Membership Info tab on the BWS website. https://bws.wildapricot.org/Bylaws Vote for Baltimore Watercolor Society Board of Governors Officers for the 2026-2029 term Baltimore Watercolor Society Bylaws stipulate that officers serve three-year terms beginning around June, the 2023–26 term now concluding. Since the existing officers (President Jennifer Kohn Murtha, Vice President Matthew Fenton, Treasurer April Rimpo, and Secretary Janet Hansen Martinet) all expressed interest/willingness in continuing for another term, and since the request published in the June newsletter did not identify any other Signature members interested in running for these positions, a vote was conducted to confirm the four for another term. Results: The poll was open to BWS Members July 1–12, 2026. Of 115 BWS members who voted, 114 approved of all four candidates. There was one disapproval, but no alternative candidate was offered. The four candidates are approved to continue to serve in the executive positions for the 2026–29 term. Your questions and comments are always welcome. Jim Sandford administered the above votes on behalf of the BWS Board and would be happy to answer your questions and pass any comments or concerns on to the Board. sandford.jim@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org |

Information on the Upcoming All-Member Online Exhibition From Pigment to Pixels Helping to bridge the gap as we transition from Fall to Spring Mid-Atlantic exhibitions, this online exhibition will be open to all BWS Members and will appear on the BWS Virtual Gallery beginning in November. Each BWS member is invited to submit one watermedia painting image for inclusion in the exhibition. The entry fee will be $20. The juror of awards will be Pittsburgh-based artist Jeannie McGuire. There will be two sets of awards, one set for Signature members, the other for Associate and Student members. Each set will include: 1st place: $400, 2nd place: $300, 3rd place $200, plus three honorable mentions $100 each. Award winners will be announced by mid-October. Since this is an online exhibition, there will be no size restrictions for paintings (big or small). Entry will be via CaFÉ September 1–30. (We use CaFÉ because it provides the system to do the online awards jurying.) An application code and instructions will be sent to all BWS members in late August. The exhibition prospectus will be viewable on CaFÉ. Taking advantage of the online format of the exhibition, your painting does not need to be for sale and may be framed or not. When you apply, you will be asked to specify one of the following, which prospective buyers will be able to see:
If BWS is contacted regarding purchase of an artwork, BWS will provide the artist with contact information for the prospective buyer. All sales are to be completed by the artist. The artist will notify BWS if the painting is purchased, so it can be marked as sold on the online presentation. There is no gallery commission (yay!) but BWS requires payment of a 10% commission on all sales paid within 30 days of the sale. Sales tax is the responsibility of the artist. Sales inquiries received after March 1, 2027 will no longer require a 10% commission to BWS. Note that we won't be posting images on the Baltimore Art Billboard as was done in the previous Pigment to Pixels exhibition. And don’t forget to plan your submissions to the next Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition which will take place April–May 2027 at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Virginia. CaFÉ will be open for Mid-Atlantic submissions (one or two submissions per artist) December 2026 through January 2027 (which is not that far off). Questions or comments welcome, please contact sandford.jim@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. |
From the Archives: The 1984 Officer Slate
by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair
Reflecting on the recent vote to confirm the BWS officer slate for the 2026–29 term, and wondering whether these ever become full-fledged competitive elections, I stumbled upon this note saved by former BWS President Karl Fehrenbach. Author Allen Abend recently interviewed Karl for the book he is writing about BWS, and Karl gave him some papers to pass on to the BWS Archives.

Karl was BWS President between 1984 and 1986, a term which included the BWS Centennial Celebration.
What strikes me about this note is how similar it is to the one I sent to BWS membership last month: We have identified a set of people who are willing to serve. If there are others anyone wishes to nominate, please let us know who, otherwise we ask for your confirmation of the slate (in 1984 at an annual meeting, in 2026 via a Wild Apricot poll).
Things have not changed that much in 42 years!

Upcoming Events
Note: The above Upcoming Events summary only displays the start date for each event. For full details please click on the event, or visit the Events page. Teach? Update Us Please Whether you’re teaching at a university or providing one-to-one tutorials, if BWS members can sign up to learn from you, we want to know what you’re doing. The Baltimore Watercolor Society has a list of members who teach on its website -- that’s a great resource. However, after introducing a “Teacher Tuesday” feature to BWS Facebook and Instagram, Social Media/Publicity Chair Lia Nigro discovered it’s not always easy to define what’s going on at the moment. “I’ve run through the list and profiled everyone where I could immediately find information on current classes. But I know there are more teachers out there!” BWS social media is a great way to get free publicity and reach new potential students, especially if your watercolor instruction goes beyond beginning levels. Want in? Just send a note to publicity@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Already profiled in a “Teacher Tuesday”? Don’t be shy about providing updates. We look forward to hearing from you. Member NewsBWS members may submit a 60-word announcement gratis to be listed under the heading “Member News,” along with one image related to the announcement. Submissions are due by the 15th of the month preceding publication date, and may be edited for length or clarity. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Be sure to include your phone number in case there are any questions about your announcement. Boxed-off featured ads are available for $25 and may include up to 100 words and one image. Contact the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org for details. Nishita Jain’s watercolor painting Light Along the Way has been selected for the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 46th International Exhibition, on view September 27–October 31, 2026, in San Diego, California. More about her work can be found at www.nishita.art and on Instagram at @nishitasart.
Catherine Hillis was awarded the Morris Watercolor Guild Award of Merit at the Transparent Watercolor Society's 50th Annual Exhibition for her painting Freefalling. She also received her Signature Letters. Catherine Hillis was selected to paint in the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival in Nova Scotia, CA during mid-June.
